POKOTABI / Kashiwaya
柏や
Bunkyo Ward's Kashiwaya offers unpretentious diner classics, from generous vegetable stir-fry sets to crisp fried chicken and katsu curry, satisfying lunch appetites with ease.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
The arrival of a bowl piled high with stir-fried vegetables is quite a sight. Bean sprouts, cabbage, garlic chives, carrots, and pork are tossed over high heat, yielding a fragrant, crisp texture. Lightly seasoned yet intensely appetising, it calls for hearty mouthfuls of rice. Tucked into a residential pocket of Kasuga in Bunkyo Ward, Kashiwaya captures the unhurried spirit of a Showa-era neighbourhood eatery, serving filling meals without pretense.
The menu is packed with straightforward canteen staples: set meals featuring large, freshly fried chunks of chicken karaage; pork ginger-fried in savoury sauce; and crunchy crumbed horse mackerel. A changing daily set and seasonal options like pork and aubergine stir-fried in miso ensure there is always variety. Aromatic Japanese curry topped with pork cutlet or fried horse mackerel is another popular choice when a heartier meal is called for.
Diners buy a ticket from the vending machine inside, hand it to the floor staff, and take a seat. The welcoming setting makes solo visits completely effortless. At peak lunch hours, seats fill quickly with neighbourhood workers and residents, creating a lively local scene. Takeaway bento boxes are also available, making it convenient to enjoy the eatery's home-style cooking at work or home.
